Basements near Lake Manawa

Lake Manawa is a Missouri River oxbow. It formed after an 1881 flood, when the river cut a new channel and left its old bend behind.1,2 The neighborhoods around it sit on that old river bottom.

What that means for your basement

Pottawattamie County describes its western bottomland soils as alluvial, with flooding and wetness limitations.3 In practice, homes in low areas often rely on a sump pump that runs during wet seasons. A backup pump and a clear discharge path matter more here than on the bluffs. Water tables vary from block to block, so ask a contractor what they see in your neighborhood rather than relying on general rules.

Check your flood zone

Look up your address on the FEMA Flood Map Service Center.4 Even outside a mapped zone, a heavy rain can overwhelm a single pump.
